Ridiculous Resolutions

My son's morning tweet says "Time to consider my New Year's resolution. My current top three are to start smoking, gain 240 lbs, or befriend a lion." He got me thinking of other ridiculous resolutions.

I have never heard anyone say, this year I will...
  • spend less quality time with my family.
  • forget about budget and planning. It's the year to spend, spend, spend.
  • focus less on others and focus instead on ME! After all, I AM amazing!!!
  • start hoarding!
I don't make any resolutions at all. Not really. Instead, I look at the new year as an opportunity. A clean slate to make better, wiser choices than I did in the year before. I do ask God for help, with a simple end-of-year prayer:

Dear God, Please show me the parts of me that need to change. How can I live healthier, wiser and more lovingly? Amen

Then I listen.

Last year, God reminded me that I have never read the entire Bible. I started that journey -- and I've only made it through the book of Exodus. It's not that I don't read the Bible daily. I do. (Almost) As I read, though, I find myself cross-referencing verses and dwelling on passsages for days. That's the way God wired me, so I'll keep plugging along. Maybe I'll finish the next three books in 2012!

How about you? Do you have a resolution, ridiculous or not? Share yours in the comments below.

Happy new year, everyone!
Love,

I've never been one to make any resolutions. Maybe I'm more realistic than others! ;) Actually, my thoughts have always been that God gives us another chance, every day, to become closer to Him. I've tried to make that my resolution every day, instead of once a year. However, I think that this year might be the right time for a New Year's resolution...there are things that I would like to change and I need to ask Him if that's the right thing!

Well, that's funny. I tried - and failed - many times to read through the Bible in a year! One year ago, I decided this was the year. And I've done it! (actually, I'm on Dec 21 ... a bit behind.) I will admit, I really had to push myself and at times I felt I was just going thru the motions. But it's great to know I actually made it through the entire Bible. I used the NIV Daily Bible in chronological order, with commentary by F. LaGard Smith. He gives background which helped me know what was going on!

As for this year, I'm excited. I have at least 2 good books to read, writing plans, and a new granddaughter due soon. Not much for resolutions, either!

I wrote about this this week too! I'm taking a mommy exemption from New Years resolutions once again!!! This doesn't mean I don't have goals, I set them all the time, I just don't think that anyone who makes daily resolutions such as "today I will not want to bang my head on a wall when my teenager asks for the 100 time if he can go to bed at 10, or the next morning acts like it is a shock that he has school" needs to make grand pronouncements!!! Lol!!! My one goal this year is to put me on the top of my to-do list!! I think this will make everyone happier in the long run!!! Wishing you and your family a wonderful New Year!!

I'm really glad I saw your comment on MommywithSelectiveMemory Community and clicked on your blog. You are reading through the bible - you are studying the bible. You are pondering, cross-referencing and dwelling on versus. Sometimes (often) I find something totally different in a verse years later that I skimmed over the first time. Actually, my New Year's resolution is to read the bible every day - even if it is just one verse. I love it when my daughter and I take turns reading versus in a chapter a day. It's not the same thing as dwelling but it is reading. Anyhoo, glad to find your blog. I'm Katie's friend from Kindergarten for Teachers and Parents. Happy New Year!

My primary resolution is to be a more Godly wife.... and of course a more Godly parent too.

The tradition with us is ever New Year's Eve my husband and I have dinner together and present each other with index cards with goals for each other and for ourselves. We hold each other accountable throughout the year and refer back to the index cards regularly to make sure we're on track. It is rare for me not to complete every resolution successfully because I'm wired that way. Extremely goal oriented. I think the trick for me is allowing myself to fall short and not pushing myself to the limit to make sure I check off every item on the list. My husband does this well. His list of goals for this year...looks almost identical to that of last year...and the year before. God bless that man! I've got alot to learn :). Happy New Year, Karen! I always enjoy visiting your blog.

Every year my resolutions include losing weight, eating healthier, being a better wife, mom, daughter, and friend. Funny thing is, every year I seem to fail miserably! So, I think this year I will resolve to not make any resolution I can't complete in a week! Maybe that way, I won't forget what I'm supposed to be working on...

I don't make resolutions but I have some things I'd like to work on this year. One is not treating my 11 yr old son like a baby. He is getting to that stage of eye rolling and "I KNOW's!" and I have to let a little go and treat him a bit more grown up. Sigh. But I still want to squeeze those cheeks and mother him. LOL!!

Nope! No "formal" New Year's resolutions. I know there are things that I really need to do like eat better, exercise more, get more sleep, and make a more concerted effort to read the Bible regularly. I guess, instead of saving these resolutions for January 1st each year, I should remember them every morning when I wake up. DAILY resolutions! Thanks for stopping by my blog today! :) Hope the haircut went well!
