I've been mom for 18 years. I'm learning to let go, here at the far end of the mommyhood journey. I know I'll always be "Mom," but "mama" and all the associated needs, wants, demands, and daily interaction that go with it are about to end. It's transition time...
Last night, he asked, "Will we still see each other a lot when I'm an adult?" I love that he thinks about such things.
We talked some. I told him my Norman Rockwellian dreams of generations sleeping under the same roof, waking on Christmas morning to eat breakfast, open gifts, play together, laugh and sing. I teared up as I shared. He smiled.
I asked if it's too much to ask.
He said, "No. I'd really like that too." Really? Yes, he assured me, REALLY!
I'm so thankful for 18 years to love him every day. Face to face, I mean. I know the future means less...
Oh, my heart.... such joy, excitement, anticipation and pride. I know he's ready for the next step.
Oh my heart.... the hole is coming. I feel it already. I just pray that it doesn't hurt too much.

oh this made me tear up. here's to wishing you a life ahead of multigenerations sleeping under one roof on christmas eve : )
i am 36 and i have a 14 year old and i still sleep at my moms on christmas eve!
Awe Karen... we know this is coming the moment we hold our babies for the first time.. and even with the 18 years of preparing for "that" moment... well... we are never prepared. Funny we try to put the inevitable out of our minds for 18 years... all the while as our little ones get older their eyes get bigger at the thought of one day moving out. I still miss my sons (a little different circumstances) but my daughter... well I already told her that mommy was going with her to college.. which was fine with her! lol!! She say at 5 y/o-- wonder what she'll say at 18? lol! Blessings to you and yours!
My 19-yr old is about to fly the nest and the time came oh sooooooooo fast. He's not gone yet, and while I'm excited for his future, and all that he will experience, he's going to another state and I sure am going to miss him.
I sometimes think about a future when my kids will have left our home. I love the talk you had with your son, and it sounds like you have a great relationship with him.
Oh no! *tears* My oldest is only 8, and I have moments of terror thinking about him actually leaving... I feel for you ((Hugs))
Love this Karen. So vulnerable. I feel your pain even though I'm 16 years from this moment. I am sure with such a sweet boy/man you will have many wonderful moments to come!

Aaawh, this is so sweet! Is your son's name Nathan? My brother is Nathan:)
There is really no way to prepare ... when our oldest left 11 years ago, I was caught completely off guard. The depth of missing a child is evidence of the love we share. Then again, new seasons of life require stretching, change and pain. There are amazing blessings in the new season!
